Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to question particular decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
