Computer-created pictures purporting to show Nicolás Maduro in custody following his capture by the American authorities have gained countless of views on social media.
Initial inauthentic synthetic picture apparently showing him being escorted off a plane surfaced a brief time later. The picture was absent from any verified government accounts; it was instead uploaded on the platform X by an profile describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.
Verification involved the SynthID tool, determining the image was produced or modified with Google AI.
More AI-generated images started circulating in the ensuing hours, appearing to show additional perspectives of Maduro under guard. Visible watermarks on the graphics indicate they came from an Instagram profile called ultravfx.
AI analysis says the further images were also produced using generative models.
Donald Trump released the first real photo of Nicolás Maduro in handcuffs aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. But even after the authentic image was made public, synthetic images continued to spread but were updated to incorporate the grey tracksuit seen on Maduro.
Online investigation indicate these updated fakes were initially shared on the video platform by a graphic design profile. Similarly, the AI-watermark detector found the new graphics were generated or edited generative artificial intelligence.
